Technology
Education has always been there even before introduction of formal learning process. Education systems have been created to facilitate learning, where a person or a society pass their knowledge ,skills and moral values from one person or a generation to another and has effects on the individual character, mind, or on their physical abilities ( Millsap). It is future oriented, and is believed to stimulates thinking and enhances growth and development. Education therefore is the key to success. It has advanced since pre-literate societies through technology. Technology usage, development, and management of appropriate technological process and resources that includes; advance knowledge on tools, techniques, crafts, and systems has an influential factor in education (Jeff and Smith). It establishes and complements established education practices and on other hand develops new ways of learning thus improving new skills and personal capabilities.
In the old technology, adults trained the young ones of their society on different knowledge and skills. They achieved transmission of knowledge and skills orally and through imitations. An example is the evolution of culture and human beings as a species that depended highly on knowledge transmission orally, and through story telling. Technology has revolutionized education, and has highly led to development of advance education (Jeff and Smith). For instance, old technology started developing through introduction of an education and training films and mechanical teaching machines that included tools like painting on the cave walls in late 1900s. Oral languages as one way of passing knowledge, and through written symbols and letters. They used overhead and PowerPoint projectors and chalkboard, which are old technologies to pass education (Perl). This on other hand led to development of formal education and schooling. This development was achieved due to extended knowledge to different cultures beyond their way of life and religious believes. Education advanced more through invention of hypertext technologies and programmed instructions techniques that were computer based (Perl). These techniques provide an environment where a learner can explore and build knowledge. This is because they are varied and strategized on instructions and time as per the requirement of the learners. On other hand, this led to development of more schools in the late 80s (Millsap). Technology keeps on changing and developing since we are living in the world of constant changes. However, from the mid 80s technology upgraded to a more digitized effective and efficient technology. These technologies include information and communication technologies, which includes the use of internets, computers, broadcasting technologies and telephony (Perl). These technologies integrate schools, equalizes learners and work places thus improving education and the economy of the world. They facilitate distance, visual, and online learning and minimize the cost of living. In today’s life these technologies stimulates and leads to development of writing skills where they create, present and store information in different formats, provides ground for research and open up foreign interactions ( Millsap). Moreover, introduction and applications of these technologies in classrooms make lessons to be interactive, provides quick and potential styles of learning, motivate students to learn valuable skills and use new technologies that helps them aim at attaining higher grades (Perl).
Improvement in use of technology in the education sector will continue especially due increased use of computer in learning .Today, what unimaginable in a few decades ago is now possible. Students can have real time lectures from their lecturers who are miles away, and now distance learning had become easier and enjoyable. Internet has provided a new source of information, which can be shared by people from different aspects of life at their convenient time (Hutinger). The introduction of e-learning and online distance learning has revolutionalized the education sector and will play a major part in education in future.
